The Naked and Famous + YAAKS: Digital 9/3/11

A few weeks ago I had to write an 80 word preview for the Brighton Source describing how Eastbourne new-comers YAAKS and New Zealanders The Naked and Famous at Digital would be an excellent evening for all to see. Had I known then what I was letting myself in for, it would have been a much harder struggle to fit it into 80 words.

First up, YAAKS. Why do they capitalise their name? And why do they make song names, that you just can’t pronounce (‘HRHRRHYTHM’)? Why? Because these local lads are very clever indeed. This secrecy has really helped gather them some sort of cult following - even the picture of them on their website is all blurry, and everybody knows as soon as you’re mysterious, you’re interesting, and that certainly is YAAKS. A combination of Foals and Friendly Fires with some extended instrumentals thrown in, watch these guys because they most certainly will be big. Plus, they have an auxiliary percussionist, and that’s just brilliant.

On to the main event, The Naked and Famous, their single ‘Young Blood’ has probably been stuck in your head for a while now, but you just don’t realise it’s them, it’s an incredibly good song, but it really doesn’t justify the band as a whole. The first half of the set is songs of the same style, songs to get everyone at the front throwing their hands up in the air, but the second half, it’s like a new band have shown up. Suddenly, Mogwai have taken hold of the sound system and we’ve got massive instrumentals and intricate, building melodies with a colossal culmination of noise at the end, with the last track of the night ‘A Wolf in Geek’s Clothing’ providing suitable carnage.
